MONO OR STEREO CAR AMPLIFIER.
WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

In todays world of Car Stereos, the amplifier choices are greater than ever before. Mono, stereo, mulit-channel. But what is the best choice to make your subs sound their best? Mono Car Stereo amplifiers are designed to make the most power output at 2 ohms.

So what does that mean to you? If you are using (2) single voice-coil speakers that have a 4 ohm impedence rating, then a good Mono block Car Stereo amplifier will give you the best boom for your buck.
Just hook your subwoofers up parallel to the amplfier (both positives together to the positive terminal and both negatives to the negative terminal).

The amplifier will then see a 2 ohm load giving you all the power that it was designed to deliver.

Stereo Car Stereo amplifiers are usually designed to make the most power from a bridged 4 ohm load or a stereo 2 ohm load. If you are using a pair of dual voice-coil subwoofers with an impedence rating of 4 ohm plus 4 ohm, then a good stereo amplifier would be your best bet. You would then have a choice of wiring the amplifer 4 ohm mono or 2 ohm stereo to get the best performance.

If you want to run the subs 2 ohm stereo, then parallel each woofers terminals (positive to positive and negative to negative), then attach just one pair of each subwoofers terminal to each channel of the Car Stereo amplifier. You will now be running a 2 ohm stereo load to the amplifier.

Some people prefer to run the same type of system at a 4 ohm bridged configuration. Simply wire each of your subwoofers in series (running a jumper from the positive of one side to the negative on the other side). Then hook the remaining terminals from the subs to the bridged terminals of the amplifier in a parallel fashion. Now you are running the Car Stereo amplifier in a 4 ohm bridged mode.

Sounds simple enough. You should now be good to go. Be sure and check with your local Car Stereo Specialist if you have any questions. They are your local experts with a trained staff to help you get the most from your Car Stereo system.

With 8 ohm subwoofers and even dual 2 ohm subwoofers, the wiring configurations seem endless. One of the leaders in Car Stereo subwoofers, Rockford Fosgate, has a handy online Wiring Wizard that will help guide you with your system. Check it out here---

Also remember that some of todays better Car Stereo amplifiers will handle a 2 ohm mono load even if they're designed as a stereo amplifier. Rockford Fosgate Power series is one of those that can handle lower impedences in a bridged mode (while making massive amounts of power). The Power Series Car Stereo amplifiers from Rockford Fosgate are truly beasts for sure. Check them out at your Authorized Rockford Fosgate dealer.
